This run seemed to be going so well, until suddenly it wasn't

I think Burst Laser I has probably saved my ass more so than any other weapon in the game.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 08:19 AM PST

Newer players often look at the Burst Laser I with a sense of disgust, because it's inevitable that they'll compare it to the BLII, the best weapon in the game. But after playing this game for a long time, I've gotten more and more fond over this humble weapon. It's basically as run saving as the Flak I but never gets a pat on the back like it does.

First off, Let's go over its stats. 2 shots for 2 isn't spectacular, and underwhelming compared to its bigger brother, BLII. But it's also good enough to get the job done. Sector 3 is one of the most important sectors and often make or break runs for newer players, since that's the sector where 2 shielded ships show up en masse. BLI usually provides just enough firepower to be reliable against those ships alongside most starting loadouts, which lets it be useful enough to tackle the first and often most important difficulty spike in the game.

Moreover, players often don't appreciate the most important aspects of the BLI: availability and cost. At rarity 1, it's one of the most common weapons in the game, and at 50 scrap, it's also one of the most affordable (Cries in rarity 4 BLII). This is hugely important on higher difficulties, when scrap management becomes more and more important. BLI is almost always cheap and easy to get running, since it only costs two extra weapon power on most ships, which can be easily afforded unless you're stealth B. Its availability often means it's one of the weapons that you'll most frequently see in stores, and the fact that it's usable in almost every gunship build make it a very welcoming sight to see in late sector 2.

Another really attractive thing about it is its charge time. 11 seconds syncs excellently with most starting loadouts. It charges before BLII, so it won't delay ships like Kestral and Fed A. It's a mere one second slower than Dual/basic, so on most other gunships, it syncs quite well. The short charge time also makes it a decent shield piercer for beams, since it'll always charge faster than beams.

TL;DR: BLI matches its description well. This simple burst laser isn't flashy but it gets the job done. Newer players often scoff at it and see it as a poor man's version of BLII. Experienced players often respect it, as they know that it's got your back when you need it the most.

    How should I post memes

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 09:45 AM PST

So recently I stubbled across this sub reddit and remember a time when I was really into FTL, watching LeathalFrag and stuff. It seemed a little less active than I'd like so I've been trying to post a meme a day to revive it. I kept getting told to post in me_ftl too, so I've started posting there. But now people are accusing me of reposting my own memes because they follow both subreddits and see it twice, so I decided to let the community tell me what they wanted me to do. Should I only post here? Should I use a watermark so people realize I'm not reposting? Please tell me what you guys think best.

    How is hard even possible?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 06:13 AM PST

I try my best to stay in the sectors long enough to get enough scrap, but it's never enough. In the end, I just don't have the firepower to get past lvl 3 shields, sometimes even lvl 2. Meanwhile, the enemies manage to get through my level four shields in record time. I try to get myself a scrap arm, and upgrade my systems whenever possible, but I just can't figure out how you're supposed to get enough scrap to defeat the flagship. You can't even linger in sectors, since you're punished for taking too long. Is there any way I can up my game?

Edit: So, after I postponed getting shield upgrades, and focused more on gathering weapons and systems, I had managed to get to sector 8 with max engines, level 3 shields, level 3 hacking, 2 Flak I, charge laser, level 2 oxygen, level 2 medbay, level 1 cloak, and a max backup battery on the Red Tail. I feel as though I've been playing the game incorrectly at this point, and now I see how powerful it can be to get max evasion. All I need now is the Vulcan chaingun and Is be unstoppable.

Does the Secret sector exploit still work?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:50 PM PST

since FTL has achivements now I got back into the game to do the remaining tasks I have left.

One of these task is finding the secret sector with the rock cruiser, and that requires 3 rng events to happen. The Wiki talks about an exploit of renaming the crystal member you get from Rock cruiser C bypassing the first 2 events. Is this exploit still funtional and what are the details of pulling it off?
