Beginner's Planning for Kestrel-A - how to?

I managed to obtain both long range scanners and scrap arm in sector one. Now I'm in sector two and just upgraded shields to two barriers. Crew is still of three, with pilot running for shields when in combat.

What to do next? Save for another crew member? Aim for some new system, or a weapon? Keep pumping shields? It's such a good start so I don't want to miserably ruin it in a couple of sectors.
