Just crushed Hard with Slug A

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 02:40 PM PDT

I stepped up to Hard a couple days ago and just beat my head against it with the Kestrel A. I finally did win with it yesterday, but it was gruesome - one empty system slot, only 1600 scrap collected, only five crew (one of whom died against the flagship), and a janky weapons loadout. It was a mess.

Of course, immediately after that win I fired up a new Hard run with a random ship and drew Slug A. It's hardly an amazing ship and I didn't get any crazy BLII-caliber early drops, but somehow everything just fell into place. After capturing every ship in Sector 1 I had the scrap to upgrade to two bubbles and buy Mind Control before hitting Sector 2. Bio-Beam and MC is an insane combo for the first few sectors and it all just snowballed from there. By the end of Sector 4, I had three bubbles, a Teleporter, and a Rock/Mantis boarding team. By the end of Sector 5, I added Drones to round out my systems (could have gone Hacking but Hull Repair had dropped for me). Also in Sectors 4-5, every bug and rock in the tri-county area decided they wanted to serve on my ship. I ended up with two Rocks and two Bugs (including Kazaaak) and turned away at least four more. My final loadout against the Flagship was 2x Flak I + Halberd + Artemis, which easily crushed it. Max shields, weapons, teleporter, reactor, and MC with L6 engines and upgraded Battery. Ended up collecting over 2000 scrap, hiring 15 crew (a new record), and scored 6286. It felt pretty much like Normal from that Sector 1 MC onwards.

What a difference a day makes... almost makes me want to fire up some jank like Engi B or Stealth C. So don't give up people - that next run could be amazing.

Honestly, even after the AE nerf, I feel like most ships just want to get into a boarding strategy unless it's completely implausible - especially on Hard where you need the extra scrap and drops. Any drop is amazing since the selling prices don't get the scrap reduction hit from Hard. Plus you really can't afford to buy crew in Hard. So yeah... boarding is still OP.

Took 200 hours and an unreal number of Rock C/Crystal A games, but we're in there.

No, thank you. I won't take the path that has only one non-Uncharted Nebula sector

    Heartbroken once again

I was so close! It actually ended with the flagship on 1 health! They were on fire, I was on fire, everything was on fire!

I had a missile hit to my drone system and they sent a boarding drone to my pilot which I just couldn't handle all at once.

What could I have done differently?

I will admit I should have switched to my defense drone at one point but missed the chance and I think that error cost me.

I can't get this close with any other ship. I don't know if I'm just bad at the game or if my style of play is well suited to the torus.

    I need a beer.
