Dakota Slim, Engi Outlaw (Engi B Hard, long)

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 09:37 PM PDT

Engi unit DAK-0-A was performing routine optimization on a database of human anthropology stored at his far-off station when he first encountered the anomaly of "cowboys". These ancient humans - contrary to Federation protocols - appeared to accomplish great deeds operating alone, as shown in various documentaries such as "The Searchers" and "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", though "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" included a "sidekick" as well. He was about to cross-check and verify the details in those sources and further explore the nature of cowboys when he received a priority order to support a mission deemed urgent to suppressing the rebellion and preserving the Federation. Having intercepted critical information regarding the Rebel flagship, the best available ship was being assigned a diverse complement of experienced crew and outfitted to race across the galaxy. But based on DAK-0-A's preliminary evaluation of westerns, he calculated an 86.2% probability that a single "gunslinger" would be the optimal choice for this important mission. However, his local superiors - not having performed the thorough research on cowboys that he had - disagreed and there was no way to contact General Turzil to appeal their decision. There was only one logical decision if the Federation was to be saved. While the hangar crew was finishing calibration of the timings on the Red Tail's four lasers before it took off, DAK-0-A copied the Flagship schematics to a local maintenance ship's computer, replaced the original data with a selection of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood clips, and set out for adventure. He would be Dakota Slim, Engi Outlaw - it was up to him to save the Federation.

    .

Dakota's initial experiences did not align with his research. Notably, the maintenance ship's Heavy Ion cannon - designed for safely disabling malfunctioning industrial equipment - was not well-suited to ship-to-ship combat, with a charge time much longer than that of the accompanying Heavy Laser. He wondered if the Engi technicians outfitting the Red Tail might have been on to something by using four synchronized small lasers instead. Dakota had never actually fired a weapon before leaving on his journey, being primarily a librarian's assistant. However, this all changed when he visited an obliging general store in the first sector and was offered a "flak gun". While he had hoped to find a proper "six-shooter", this new weapon seemed at least similar to the "shotguns" that also appeared prominently in his research, so he negotiated a trade for his old ion weapon. He decided the flak gun would be named "Bessie" and set off in search of targets, which he promptly found and eliminated much more quickly than with the old Heavy Ion cannon.

    .

While the Vortex was now combat-worthy, Dakota still could not reconcile his experiences with his research. His expectation was that friendly "townsfolk" would provide him with resources or possibly travel with him "for a spell". Still, he crossed almost three entire sectors without finding any allies. At one base, he found some rough-looking types that seemed like good recruits, but after paying his hull repair bill he found himself unable to offer them appropriate payment. He was - as the documentaries described it - "down on his luck". So, speeding alone through the warp at night, he played harmonica tunes via his vocal synthesizer for the Anti-Personnel and Repair Drones. But the drones didn't respond even though they were fully powered-up. They didn't understand cowboys like he did.

    .

Dakota was nearing the exit of the third sector with little to show for his efforts beyond Bessie. He was beginning to suspect that his calculations regarding his mission's success might require further data and reevaluation, and visited a local saloon with his last 75 scrap in hand to "drown his sorrows", though he wasn't clear on exactly how that worked for an Engi. Surprisingly, the bartender was familiar with cowboy culture, though perhaps that's to be expected in a Pirate Sector. The grizzed old ex-pirate listened to Dakota's story, nodded thoughtfully, and replied "Son... a cowboy doesn't win with just a gun. He wins with determination, by staring down his opponent in the dusty glare of high noon and never flinching. He wins with his spirit." Dakota reevaluated his research in light of this advice and found that he had indeed overlooked this aspect of cowboys. He thanked the bartender for his hospitality, took his 75 scrap to the shop next door, and bought a Mind Control system. As an Engi, he could never have the mind of a cowboy. But at least he could imitate its effects.

    .

Just before leaving the pirate sector, Dakota found the opportunity to use his new system to "stare down" a well-known slaver. With the enemy crew cowed into disorder and submission, he found it a surprisingly easy fight. He considered whether he might find allies in the slaver's cargo hold, perhaps a strong and silent type like a Rock - he understood sidekicks were supposed to be complementary in physique and personality. He heard a great scuffle in the hold and out stepped... another Engi. Dented and battered, this Engi was the rough-and-tumble sort who loved a good Melee. He had, in fact, beat down the other slaves in order to be the first out of the hold. Dakota knew he had found his sidekick. After quickly transferring his cowboy research to the new Engi and evaluating it jointly, they decided he would be named Bones.

    .

Together, Dakota and Bones cut a path across Sectors 4 and 5, eventually locating a second flak gun so that Bones could have his own. There were good times - rejecting surrenders and stealing civilian supplies. And there were hard times - there was never nearly enough power to go around and their ship was often on the brink of destruction. Dakota and Bones weren't entirely clear on what the "boozing and whoring" in their research entailed, but they calculated a high probability that they were doing it. In fact, their reputation had grown so much that after finishing a delivery to a merchant at the end of Sector 5, the merchant's daughter decided she would come along to "civilize" them. Dakota and Bones tried to convince her to take on a proper cowboy name, but she told them she would have none of their foolishness. So Stella the Slug came aboard. The boys were dismayed by her scolding, but they had to admit that her feminine charms and telepathy made their Mind Control system more effective - they hadn't yet found the 25 scrap needed to upgrade their Sensors, so having Stella aboard meant that Bones no longer needed to run back and forth between the sensors console and the engine room.

    .

Dakota, Bones, and Stella made good progress across Sectors 5-7, hampered only occasionally by boarders. But the boarders always seemed to jump into the Mind Control room only to be left in the vacuum and beaten down by the Anti-Personnel drone. At the same time, they made fateful decisions about the Vortex. With great trepidation, Stella watched Dakota and Bones trade away the Burst Laser I from their cargo hold and the last of their scrap to buy a Drone Recovery Arm. She asked them how that could possibly help when they didn't own any drones that actually left the ship. Dakota replied that she obviously knew nothing about prospecting and should go watch "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre". When he found a Mark II Defense Drone floating in space in Sector 6, Dakota spent a great deal of time polishing it in front of Stella and explaining how he would use it in every single battle until she went off and sulked in the weapons room. And later in Sector 6, he traded off another Defense Drone (Mark I) he had recently found along with the scrap that was supposed to upgrade their reactor for a Halberd Beam. Stella didn't approve of this either, pointing out that they only had five units of weapons power and that replacing their Heavy Laser with the beam would push that to a far-off and costly seven. Dakota remarked that she had awfully little vision for a telepathic Slug who fired the weapons all day. In the meantime, the new Hacking system would get them through the sector.

    .

By the end of Sector 7, Dakota's visions of power and notoriety would be fulfilled. Finally using the Halberd Beam along with the two Flak guns and the Hacking system, the Vortex was able to shred most opposition, protected by its Defense II drone and Bones's skillful piloting. Power was absurdly tight, with Dakota constantly rerouting circuits between the engines, drones, and shields. But the Vortex prevailed. One hop short of Sector 7's exit, the ship came upon a smoldering Engi base, with the chance of rescuing an occupant. Aided by the ship's Long Range Scanners, Dakota and Bones extracted El Nub Nub. Dakota recognized immediately that El Nub Nub must be a "bandito" and thus that their Engi-style "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" were on the brink of success. And then, in the very last beacon of Sector 7, they found one last ally for hire - a female Zoltan. Finally someone could operate the shields! And help power them! The new recruit was more agreeable to Dakota's ramblings than Stella, so Dakota and Bones decided she would be Etta to their Butch and Sundance.

    .

Now operating with an impressive complement of five crew members, the Vortex made its way through the gauntlet of Sector 8. Despite being forced to cross a Rebel-held beacon just short of the base, the Vortex put down the opposing elite fighter, dodged the ASB barrage, and made ready to face the flagship. The cowboys(/cowgirl/cowslug) would have liked another Shield bubble. Or better Mind Control. Or more Drone capacity. Or for god sakes more reactor power... even with a backup battery active, the Vortex couldn't fully power its onboard systems, much less the defense drone. But there was no more scrap to be had, and no more time.

    .

The first stage of the Rebel Flagship fell with little fanfare, as Dakota knew it would given his study of the schematics. Hacked shields followed by dual Flak bursts and a Halberd Beam did so much damage that the flagship only fired a single round of missiles. The second stage's Defense Drone would prove more challenging, but Dakota knew he could slip a Hacking drone past it just behind the Flak barrage. With that and an Anti-Drone Drone providing support, it had only enough time for a single drone surge. But Stage 3... without a boarding party or top level Mind Control in the first two stages, the flagship still had nearly its full crew. And three Engi, one Slug, one Zoltan, Level 2 Doors, and an aging Anti-Personnel drone are not exactly a stiff resistance to boarders. El Nub Nub - bandito that he was - urged the posse to bait the enemy crew onto the ship before running away. But Dakota was outraged at the suggestion and said it betrayed everything they had fought for. "Engi's gotta have a code." Besides, it had been a long time since he had a good scrap, what with the AP drone doing all the fighting and him stuck in the cockpit. But not completely certain, Dakota pursued the Flagship away from the base for the final confrontation. Just in case. The boarders came in waves as the Vortex worked to break through the Flagship's Zoltan Shield, but were confined to stern of the ship where they were occupied in the vented Drone Control room by the AP drone. Finally breaking through the Zoltan Shield, Dakota aimed the Halberd Beam to catch the enemy's Teleporter and - aided by a fortunate Combat Drone hit - destroyed the teleporter and trapped the remaining crew onboard the flagship. With that accomplished, it was only a short time before final victory.

    .

With the Vortex's success and the final defeat of the Rebellion, DAK-0-A's superiors declined to deactivate him for his anomalous behavior. However, they did emphasize in their debriefing that his "performance metric" was a mere 4569 and that their projections for the Red Tail had been much higher. The Vortex had only defeated 29 ships and only collected 1476 scrap. But Dakota knew that being a cowboy wasn't about the metrics or the scrap or even the guns you had. He landed on a nearby planet in a beautiful binary star system, debarked from the Vortex, and walked off into the dual sunset.

    .

Postscript: This was an immensely entertaining and satisfying run - the only one I've ever written up. I had just come off of three days of beating my head against the Rock A in Hard. The Rock A is my absolute least favorite ship in the game because of it's early RNG-dependence and mindlessness, and I was so annoyed by it that I would make mistakes once I finally did have meaningful choices to make. After finally winning with that POS, some masochistic streak led me to do Engi B next, just to get it out of the way. This was my first - and will probably be my only - Engi B run on Hard. It's a bad ship with a huge scraphole to dig out of. But looking back at the run, I really didn't get much in the way of gifts. I bought the two Flak I's and the Halberd in shops, and those are common enough to find across a whole run. I didn't hit any unlock quests with big rewards. ~1400 scrap collected is horrible even in Hard, but I was funneled into Engi sectors at two points and had to run from a few fights too. The only really important drop I got was that Defense II drone - those aren't easy to find and they're expensive to buy. I mostly just ignored any upgrades/purchases that weren't critically important. Putting aside the 50 for the Drone Arm and the 65 for the Halberd was agonizing when I knew I couldn't use them soon, but those were investments that paid off. That also meant doing a crazy amount of power micro during combat. I have a much greater appreciation of the Defense II drone after this run - it's basically an extra shield layer for one power bar more than a regular Defense I drone, and one that can be activated faster than a shield bubble takes to recharge. I was also struck once again by how excellent early Mind Control is in Hard. 75 scrap, no consumables, no need to upgrade for ages, and it helps in so many ways. I got a number of crew kills just using MC and patience, and that also helped squeeze out a tiny bit scrap in a tough run.

Super fun run. I'm looking forward to never playing Engi B again.

FTL not showing the whole gamespace

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 07:48 AM PDT

    Hey reddit,

I have an issue with FTL that I cannot fix, so maybe one of you guys knows what's up. FTL only draws the bottom-right portion of the window and leaves the rest blank. I can still blindly click the UI that should be present in this region. Already re-downloaded it on Steam but that didn't do it. Anyone had something similar?

This is how it looks like.
