World Record Winstreak (109+!) Vods are now available!

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 09:02 PM PDT

Hello! For those who don't know I am neozar (stats), currently on the world record win streak for consecutive hard wins. I am up to 109 with the streak still alive! I've been streaming my runs for a few months now and have finally gotten videos of all my streams up on youtube for anyone who's interested. I try to explain my decision making as I go, as well as answer questions, in a chill, mature environment.

Having absolutely no experience in the streaming world until now the first runs are a bit rougher for sure, so unless you're really onboard with going through them all I'd recommend skipping ahead a bit and checking out a later run or ship you're interested in. I've also been in the process of trimming off some of the dead space which should be about caught up processing by now, but please let me know if there's anything that makes the videos annoying to watch that I can fix.

I figured I could also recommend some interesting starting points. If you want to watch a very difficult almost streak ending run I'd start with run #90 Zoltan C (unfortunately the only one I couldn't trim due to a fake copyright strike).

Another one I think is pretty interesting is this extremely difficult sector 1 from run #77 Stealth A

The first half of run #87 Mantis B was also pretty miserable which many people seem to enjoy.

The best thing though might be to just jump in on a ship you're interested about! Expect to see lots of hacking, mind control, and crew killing. And reloaders.

Also note I started streaming partway into the 3rd cycle (28 wins = 1 on each ship for a cycle), so you see the last 18 ships from that cycle, as well as the first 25 ships of the fourth cycle (and hopefully the final 3 soon!). There's at least one run of each ship and two for several. Also because of how long my runs take and a limited schedule many runs are split into 2 videos, they should be labeled accordingly i.e. '99a, 99b.' There are also two of the earlier runs with incomplete video, I had the settings much too high and ran out of space so they were not saved unfortunately. Feel free to ask any questions about my streak, channel, or FTL in general!

[Edit]: Forgot to add, Crystal B is up next! Monday night, usually start between 10-11 EDT.

Crystal shop had a Flak II and a Flak I, and I found another Flak II in space.

Feels bad lol, was rushing through the game so I could get a feel for the boss' 3rd phase because I had been so hard stuck after 30+ loss streak. I think I just ended up accidentally cheesing my first win.

How to be a scrap hoarder and get loads of scrap to spend on drugs and hookers.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 02:35 PM PDT

One of the best ways to make scrap is to not spend it. One of the best ways to not spend scrap is to not take damage or run out of resources.

    • Upgrade shields to two bubbles before you do anything else, and for the first few sectors, the majority of ships will not be able to damage you.
    • The first 5 levels of engines increase evasion by 5% per level, but everything after only increases it by 3%, so generally get to 4-5 and don't go beyond that unless you're rich and got nothing else to spend scrap on. This extra evasion means more dodges, which means faster leveling of pilot and engines, and your "effective number" of shield bubbles increases.
    • Especially in early sectors, take the resources offered into account when a ship asks to surrender. 5 fuel and 6 missiles are often worth a lot more than the extra scrap you would've gotten.

Being able to avoid damage also gives you more time to meticulous murder everyone on board the enemy ship.

    Augments:

    • Scrap Recovery Arm is a complicated decision. I'd get it if it's early, you're cruising fine, and you're not in need of immediate scrap.
    • Long-Range Sensors is huge, as it means maximizing the number of beacons you visit that have pinatas filled with scrap. Almost always worth it.
    • Distraction Buoys sucks shit. Maybe keep it if you find it, but only if you have the room.

One of the things I love about this game is the wide variety you have when it comes to mercilessly and slowly slaughtering enemy crew, which gives you fat gains. While things like hacking, boarding, and fire are great, you don't even need them sometimes. Look for any opportunity to kill the crew instead of the ship:

    • You can essentially see any anti-crew tool as an enhanced form of Scrap Recovery Arm (you can get all kinds of cool shit for killing crew, on top of 10% extra scrap), that you may or may not keep for the flagship. Anti-Bio Beam also lets you kill giant alien spiders (no joke) which makes it extra cool. Boarding Drones suck though.
    • I always try to get hacking, and when I do, almost every ship I hack the O2. I learned that you can destroy the system mid-hack and the hack will continue, so I start the hack then immediately destroy the O2.
    • An alternative, one I use mostly for the flagship, is to bust the medbay, wait until people go to repair it (blasting the shields room a bunch of times to increase the number of injured crew), then hack it and suck the lifeforce out of their bodies. When the hacking comes off lock, I depower it to open up the doors for more volunteers.
    • Mantis ships are great fun. When they send some poor fool over, I destroy their teleporter so he can't get rescued, then get his ass (you can do this for any ship with a teleporter). Because they're so slow to repair, it's often viable to repeatedly blow up the O2 with your weapons whenever it gets repaired, with the crew suffocating before the ship runs out of health. If there's an Engi, I try to either mind control him so the rest of the crew kill him, or I blast his room until he dies.
    • If you have multiple ion weapons (or the ion mark II) and the enemy has insufficient shields, you can autofire them on the O2 to keep it locked until they suffocate with nothing they can do.
    • If you start fires on their ship, break their O2. They will prioritize putting out the fires, and said fires drain oxygen faster, which can result in their ship being drained of oxygen before they can react. This is how you can use fire against Rock ships. If you have fire weapons, you can target the O2 with them to delay repairs.
    • Mind Control isn't as great as it sounds, because it's slow and you can't use it to kill the last guy. What you can do is mind control someone to draw others to the room, then repeatedly bombard it to damage everyone. All normal weapons deal 15 damage per point of damage they do. You can look at the enemy hull health to see if you'll be able to finish off remaining crew with weapons. One other thing about Mind Control, is that according to the Wiki, higher levels increase the duration, to 14/20/28 respectively, which isn't mentioned in the system description.

Hello, DrMoo42 here, you may know me as the captain of "Showing off" and "The No Internet". Today I'm here to discuss some tips and tricks for beating hard mode that I haven't seen elsewhere.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 08:11 AM PDT

This advice is intended to assist in beating Vanilla FTL with advanced edition, on hard.

most of the tips I use in a run can be found here or in the about section of this very subreddit
I am by no means a master and have yet to beat every ship on hard however I still believe the advice presented here to be valuable to learning players and experienced veterans. The tips presented are in no particular order.

    • The First 50 Scrap
Conventional wisdom states that for most ships you should spend your first 50 scrap on a second shield bubble, this is good advice. However there a few things that are worth delaying that purchase for. Bringing your first 50 scrap to a store can present some valuable options. If you start with a drone bay spending your first 50 scrap on a defense 1 drone will save you more damage than the early shields. Alternatively buying long range scanners is also worth getting early.
    • Long Range Scanners is the best augment.
Players new to hard mode are often discouraged from buying the scrap recovery arm due to fact that it is slow to pay off and early scrap being more valuable. However what if I told you there was an augment that was half the cost and easily twice as effective. Well it's long range scanners, 10% more scrap is fine, but getting a fight every jump all the way to sector eight pays off fast. In addition, the extra information helps plan efficient routes through each sector. Oh and also it stops you from encountering environmental hazards. For 30 scrap the only reason you shouldn't buy this is if you already have it.
    • Events fall into a few categories to help with memory
      • "fight?" -yes/no
      • "Fight!" -ok
      • "something is wrong and we need a blue event!"- yes/no/yes, I have an engi.
      • quests - escort/drone parts
      • trades - "2 missiles for 9 fuel sound good?"
      • misc/adventure - "how many moons?"/"zoltan wizard"/Crystal ship
    • Most weapons fire at ~10-11 seconds
use this to build effective volleys and prepare for enemy attacks. Weapons that fire signifigantlly slower than this better be worth it (halberd beam).
    • Weapons fall on a spectrum from "payload" to "delivery"
Delivery weapons are good at taking down shields, payload weapons are less effective on shields but deal lot of damage to hull/systems/crew. Pairing weapons from opposite ends is the best way to deal damage. In addition, this can inform you what weapons to fire first. The order from most payload to most delivery is:
Beams > Heavy Lasers > Hull Lasers > Burst Lasers > Flak > Bombs > Missiles > Hacking > Ion.
    • Some other stuff
      • You generally get enough drone parts to activate 1 per fight.
      • Missile weapons are more for the enemies than they are for you, avoid them when possible
      • The engi A is the least skill intensive ship in the game, the crystal B is the most.
      • Play it to the end, many runs that look doomed have turned into top scores.
      • in general, defense 1 drones are the only drone worth using.
      • Weapons calculate if they are going to hit upon reaching the shield border, unless you have no shield border in which case they calculate once they reach their target. Cloaking after this point will have no effect.
      • Hacking is stupidly overpowered, especially once you know how to get past defense drones.
      • Don't go into shops unless you have 80 scrap for that Burst laser II (or other stuff).
      • The Kestrel C is weirdly good at getting crew kills.
      • Never repair to full at a store, I generally stay at 20/30 hull to take advantage of event based repairs.
      • Pause more

Ok I think that's it for now. If you have any questions feel free to ask them in the comments.

Any Reliable FTL Profile Editors out there?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 10:31 PM PDT

I have Faster than Light on my iPad Pro and was plannng on buying it on Steam. I'm not 100% sure if I can transfer my progress but I'm guessing I can't. Are there any profile/game editors that are legit that can unlock all ships and unlock achievements? I've worked hard for my achievements and I'd hate to see it all go to waste.

    Beginner question

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 07:57 PM PDT

I've put some hours into the game now and I started playing on easy so I could figure out how to play and get the tactics down and now that I mastered that Im playing on normal, even on easy that period at the start before you level up the shields can be brutal because most ships have multiple weapons that break through it, and they always fire before you, but on normal Im just getting melted by missiles drones and asteroids

is there any tactics to not get destroyed before you can afford to level up the shields

    Def drone 1 accuracy

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 10:59 AM PDT

Anyone know it's accuracy in a non burst situation? I feel like it's around 85%, or 1 in 6 missiles get through. I know the ship size plays a factor too. Engi ships have it easier probably intentionally.

What are your favorite names to give to ships and crew?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 01:37 PM PDT

I'm fond of video games letting you nickname stuff but I also like the names to "fit", mean something, be a reference and or be fun. I was wondering what y'all like to name stuff in Ftl.

    I'll l go first:

    Ships:

    Kestrel B: Rebel 1

    Engi ships: Donut

    Federation B: LightliNX

    Federation C: Jackdaw

    Crew:

    Humans: Skip, Tai, Solana

    Engi: Ion, Tboom, Mach, J-21

    Rock: Wrock, Wrick, Wreck

    Mantis: Scy, Kelek, Kiron

Lanius: You Leave, Me Breathless, Citrin,

Zoltan: Mr.Helium, Argon, Krypton, (rest of noble gases)

    Slug: Haught

    Crystal: Diamante

    Flagship, jump worthy hacks

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 10:58 AM PDT

I jump if shields are hacked. I'm thinking of adding engines and piloting.

Teleport isn't too bad, you can just wait it out.

O2 I don't remember getting hacked by the FS, that one may be a problem too.

    How about you guys?

Mod suggestions for someone new to modding?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 12:44 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks in advance to anyone who gives advice. I don't know very much about modding but some of the mods I've heard a little about sound really cool. Does anyone have a suggestion of a mod (or mods) that would be good to start out with? and some basic info about installing the mod and all that stuff (a link to a place with info that is reliable and up to date would also be helpful).

Which crew race is the best?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 03:19 PM PDT

Some races are excellent boarders, some are great at fixing, others are glorified battery packs. So I wanted to create a poll of which race people see as the best generally, rather than in their support or boarding roles.

I haven't included a Humans or Crystals, because Humans are common and uninteresting, and crystals just don't appear enough (and because I can only fit 6).
