    Trying out the captain edition

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 11:55 PM PDT

Own FTL for a long time, occasionally play them on and off. Got an urge to play some FTL lately but wanted some variaty which lead to me looking for mods, the first one to try is obviously captains edition.

First I wanted to say it's pretty cool that they have included more weapons and crews, some of them are cool concepts and there is a lot more encounters which I found lacking in the base game.

But after a few games, when the novelty wear off, I feel there is much to desired.

The balance of the game leave some desired. it definitely make the game harder, especially trying to go through shield in late game. Imo There are too much new weapons that doesn't damage shield, and yes you have more variety but at the end I end up using the same weapons again as you need to go through 4 layer of shield when fighting the final boss.

In the base game, it feel much more fair. When I lose a game, I feel like I can do better or there is mistake I had made. With captain edition, I usually end up feeling helpless and salty in situations.

The rebal fleet is much stronger which make sense to lore, but not the game play. With the new encounters that sometime double their pursue, it just make a disheartening combos. (Just ended one where I have calculated the perfect route and got hit with the betrayal encounter, lost one crew member and double pursue. End up getting destroyed by the rebal fleet.)

The final boss is also much stronger than the rest of the game, one could cruise for most of the game and get destroyed at the final boss. It is much stronger now and I feel like only a certain build could win that fight which make the rest of the build obsolete even it works on normal fight.

More weapons are nice, but I don't like the balances that captains edition made. The flak one is pretty op in the original, but nerfing it by one damage just completely make it obsolete (worst than a blast 1). Or the ship that equip with 4 basic laser in the original which is strong early game but need to upgrade with better weapon during travel, the replacement ship with 2 basic and a weak laser just doesn't make sense. I'd rather picking up the rest of the ship / weapon to its level instead of nerfing it, especially with a harder final boss.

The difficulty also spike too much, encounter could go from wining without a sweat and the next one get owned 75% of hull. As mentioned the difficulty between final boss and the rest of the game also have a huge gap. The easy difficulty is the new normal and the normal feel like hard or even impossible.

I also rarely use trading as they don't really earn you that much and take up precious argument spaces.

Maybe I am wrong, I hope I am as I am pretty disheartened with so many losses with it so far.
I might try multiverse next and hope I will have a better experience with it.

    Goddamn Multiverse is Amazing!!!

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 12:32 PM PDT

What people say about Multiverse basically being FTL 2 is extremely true. I feel as though it changes the game in so many ways while still keeping that same consistent feeling I get playing the original FTL.

What was surprising was the more stylistic writing. It manages to still stay within the very brutal, sci-fi, race for survival type of tone while introducing wackier events and moments that feel like it expands the world in a way that goes further than flavour text while also being really funny at times. I really loved moments (mild spoilers) especially like the alien-version of the rebel fleet that formed against human beings, or moments like when the rainbow ship with its hallucinating, delusional captain comes to attack you, just make the scope of how large the universe is, much bigger than the original game IMO.

Gameplay changes like being able to upgrade your ship without using augment slots feel really appropriate to me, and I feel a lot like they managed to increase that sense of upgrading your ship and making it more powerful for the final encounter without making the game too easy, and with the sheer number of new ships and types of enemies it feels very much like a way more populated world and a full space.

I thought they generally reworked weapons in ways that make them more balanced and satisfying to play too :)

It takes a few minutes figuring out how to install the mod but it's so worth it IMO. I think it's really, really awesome, especially as basically a community made thing that is literally given out for free. It's a lot of content, but most importantly it's content that's made and integrated well into the base game.

Can you swap from a clonebay to a medbay?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 07:27 PM PDT

I'm relatively new to FTL, but I've managed to win with many of the A ships on normal, and I am almost completely done with all the mantis ships. While I am getting better at the game, I really dislike the clonebay compared to the medbay, especially for a boarding heavy ship like the Mantis C. I know you're able to buy a clonebay to replace your starting medbay, but can I do the inverse and buy a medbay if I start with the clonebay? I've checked many stores, but none seem to have it

    [Multiverse] Challenge level and unlocks

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 06:05 PM PDT

Hey all, Just started playing multiverse, and have only been playing on easy+casual mode, but haven't gotten to find some of the cool side quests that I've heard about. I got to do the Hektar stuff once, but I was wondering if the difficulty blocked me out of it?

I know traveling minibosses don't spawn, but does that effectively lock me out of a lot of content?

Also, is there a seed bank someone can refer me too? I don't have a whole lot of free time, so I might resort to seed hunting to find some of the content I'm looking for. Thanks!

    [Arsenal+ English] What the Slurm?!

I'm relatively new to Arsenal+ and only have beaten it once. I'm doing pretty well this run and I found a few "slurm" items. I have no idea what they do. I also don't know what the storage box "tully" is for.

Is there a wiki somewhere I can refer to? Or any kind of guides? I don't know if I should keep or sell my slurm

Black screen when using FTL: Multiverse

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 08:28 PM PDT

Hello, my game is a black screen when I launch into Multiverse but I can still hear audio and such. I have the Hyperspace files in my ftl game location as well as the downgraded version, and I run hyperspace and then multiverse in Slipstream.

Please let me know if I need to doublecheck something. Thank you!

    Multiverse

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 10:03 AM PDT

I've seen a lot of the Multiverse Mod lately, and I'm interested. However, I have no idea how modding FTL works and I'm afraid of breaking something if I try to do it by myself. I also don't know where to find actual download links, as opposed to sites that will just infect my computer with an ungodly amount of viruses. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice offered.

[Multiverse] Human Crew Full Skills bug

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 07:49 AM PDT

I am sometimes getting a bug where all my human crew get full skills even when I had them before installing the Onboard Lab Upgrade... it seems kinda random, does anyone know how to trigger this bug intentionally?

[Multiverse] To be or not to be?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 05:20 AM PDT

The topic here is the true ending of the Multiverse modification.

What did you do with the Paragon? Please share your opinion on which decision is better.

My own opinion: I'd say blow that bomb. We can see how Multiverse drive affects the people who use it. There isn't a single good Multiverse traveler that we can meet, so if blowing the bomb means that they're forever stranded in some deep space - I'm actually happy about it.

    What triggers the zoltan shield?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2021 05:08 AM PDT

As we know, the flagship in phase three can either trigger a barrage of lasers or recharge its zoltan shields. And up until now, I can't seem to put my finger on it what triggers each power surge.

Sure, time is the factor that determines when a power surge comes, but its effect can be different. Are you guys having any idea?

I personally observed that whenever I manage to not get hit multiple times by the lasers and I still inflict damage, the flagship recharges its shield, but I could be mistaken. What's the real deal with the power surge?
