Managed to save up a decent amount of scrap(on hard). The Stealth A is fun.

    Boarding Crew Advice

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 04:06 PM PDT

After struggling a lot to get more ships by myself, I tried to play with my friend's profile. It was awesome to screw around with more than a handful of vessels, especially when I tried Mantis/Crystal Bs. Boarding strategy is like another beast entirely. I died like thousands of times, but I still want to master it, so here is my question:

What boarding composition is considered the best? Crystal B taught me that lockdown is strong, but do I really need to aim for four crystal boarding party? Maybe it will be better to mix it with bugs, for a two crystal / two mantises split?

strategies and tips for crew-killing without hacking or teleporter?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 12:04 PM PDT

I'm just graduating into Normal from Easy mode, and I'm also trying to rely less on hacking and boarding for both ordinary ships and the Flagship.

I'm wondering what obscure tips everyone has for getting crew kills without leaning on either of those two systems. (Mainly for early game when you don't have them, but also if you run into a situation where you don't have them at the end, like I did yesterday).

I will usually go for oxygen, but if I'm destroying it, the ship often gets accidentally destroyed before the crew dies. Sometimes I try to use an ion weapon to ionize oxygen, but that seems to take forever, and if the ship is a threat to me, I will be doing hull damage anyway trying to keep its shields/weapons down. I generally don't acquire more than one ion weapon at a time.

I'm familiar with the Antibio Beam, of course, as well as the Fire Beam. Boarding Drone, too, but I probably wouldn't buy one of those and would only use it if I got it for free. I'm looking for more...creative solutions.

Ion Stunner? Other fire weapons? Are there certain lasers that are ideal for killing crew without destroying the ship?

I think the stealth A is one of my favourites tbh, though the type A fed cruiser is still the best

Is it just me or is the Mantis Cruiser A bad?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 09:23 AM PDT

I've been playing ftl on and off for like a year. I've beaten the game maybe 8 times with different ships, but I just can't seem to make it to the flagship with the Mantis Cruiser. It's main gimmick really seems like more of a hindrance than a help once you consider what you're paying for it. Teleportation is useless against automated ships early in the run, and it just feels like there are so many encounters where you get completely screwed by your ship design. Early game ships with Zoltan Shields come to mind. One time I encountered a ship with the drone that gives a level of Zoltan Shields and I literally did not have the fire power to get past it.

My general strategy is send in the boarding crew to one of the two person rooms, usually weapons if it actually is two person, else I'll send to the cockpit. Sometime I'll go to a four person room if I dont think they have the man power for it to matter. I use the S. Bomb to blow up the shields then pluck away at weapons and shields with the lazer while trying to kill their crew before the ship explodes. Am I doing something wrong? Do other people share my disdain for the ship? I honestly wouldn't even be trying to use it if other ships weren't locked behind it.

Edit: I only play on normal by the way. Figured that was worth mentioning.
