I've been trying to get a normal victory with Engi B for a week now. It's brutal! It feels like I need perfect drops and stores early to have a chance.

The slow weapons combined with one crew and engine are too much to overcome. My goal was to get full fleet victories on normal then move to hard, but my spirit is broken.

What am missing????

Playing on Advanced Edition Normal. I have an odd setup, Kestral A with 5 human crew, full health, 29 missiles, 20 drone parts, 376 scrap

Weapons: Burst laser 2, Ion 2, Artemis, Hull laser 2

Drones: Two defense drone 1's

Systems: Shield L4, Engine 5, Med 1, O2 2, Weapon 5, Drone 2, Teleport 2, Mind control 1, Reactor 25, Pilot 2, Doors 2, Sensors 2

Situation. I'm at the Sector 8 store. For sale:

6 missles, 2 drone parts
FTL Jammer, FTL Recharge booster, Shield Charge Booster
Drones: Anti-drone, Anti-personel, Shield
Weapons: Ion Stunner, Flak 2, Burst Laser 1
Clone bay

Concerns

Is there any way to bulletproof against the 8 shot heavy laser on phase 3 flagship? Or do I have to just rush it before it kills me?
I'm thinking about buying the clone bay, it costs 50, good or bad?
I'm thinking about buying the Flak 2. It costs 80 though. Is there a case for buying ion stunner to suppress shields/med bay (along with BL 2 auto fire) to kill crew? I lean towards flak 2 volleys, seems more overwhelming
Should I run 2 defense drones during phase 1/2 (anti-missile, anti-boarding drone) or is that wasteful?
What systems would you upgrade? I think I need to max weapons. Maybe add 2 to drone system if 2 defense 1 drones is worthwhile
I should run from all fights after leaving the store right?
Any other general tips welcome. I feel iffy about this one, I think the weak point is the 8 shot heavy laser overburst

Genuine question as I am new to the game (got the Flagship once though) but I see on video and read this is with Burst Laser 2 two of the best weapons in the game.

While I reccon BL2 is definitely very good, I find Flak 1 pretty lame as 4 times on 5 shots it miss. Was it better on the standard edition and then downgraded on the advanced one which could explain the discrepancies? Or am I just very unlucky with it (already more or less 10 runs with it though and still the same feeling).
