Just started playing this game this week. Didn't expect it to be this hard even on easy

RNG Gods favored me today. Hard Mode. Got a Vulcan and pre-igniter in drops in 2nd and 3rd sector.

This was definitely me last night... err, this morning...

Does RNG Change with difficulty level?

Trying to beat this game on Hard with every ship. Got frustrated, dropped back down to Normal for a few games, then back up to Hard.

Maybe its confirmation bias, and I'm seeing it because I expect to see it, but wow, on Hard it's just always whatever is the worst thing that could happen at that particular moment? 100% guaranteed to happen. Every shot that gets through hits a systems room. And starts a fire. And not just one, but two. Trying to use the cloaking option to get past that auto scout to that supply cache? FAIL. Really, really need at least two shots from your Burst Laser II to hit and take down the shields so you can hit a system with a Heavy Laser? FAIL.

Had a good run going with the Crystal Ship, 4 man boarding crew with Rock and Mantis added to the two Crystals, stored a few credits, sold the Crystal Vengeance, upgraded engines, looking for a store to start adding weapons and augments. (Another way you get FTL'd on Hard - stores have the crappiest weapons and augments, EVERY TIME! Or they have awesome ones when you can't afford them...)

So, with a full boarding crew, plenty of fuel, a stash of credits and most of the hull strength, I was liking my chances. Then. Right at the end of Sector 2, jumped into an Auto Scout with BL II and missile. Yikes, wait for the engines to cycle up and jump away. And pray. Cloaked when the missile fired. But yeah, still hit, and yeah, hit the shield room, and yeah started a fire, and yeah not just one but two. Yeah. And the BL II then hit the engines, and yeah started a fire. And having scrambled the boarding team into the shield room to repair it, guess where the next missile hit? And then the BL II takes out the cloaking, and the fire in the engine room is out of control, got to vent, can't fix it, crew all on very low health, now a sitting duck and the BL II and missile not so slowly take my ship apart and I just about hurl my mouse through the screen. I love this game.

Upside was that dropping back to Normal seemed like a cakewalk in comparison, but I swear RNG was much much kinder across multiple games at Normal. As soon as I moved back to Hard, wham! FAIL!

Does RNG change with difficulty level? Or does it just feel like it?

Making twin vulcans on hard/adv more than just a meme run

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 08:27 AM PST

On my latest run with Crystal A, I had the incredibly good fortune of an early long range sensor and scrap arm. This left me very rich and after assembling a perfectly viable flak I/crystal B/crystal H, I spotted two stores selling vulcans in a row.

Why the hell not, I think to myself. I use one initially as a shield stripper so my crystals can hit medbays ahead of boarding. But the plan is always to stop boarding and switch to dual.

I find cloaking, I find hacking. OK, all set. Finally upgrade weapons to max, shields to max, dodge to 40 evade pre-cloak.

Good thing I did all that before bringing dual vulcans online. The next 4 ships I fight all hack my weapons, and have missiles that relentlessly shoot at weapons as well. No problem, I just keep on cloak-dodging those missiles, and I hack the hackers right back, which kills their drone.

Vulcans should always target shield systems, since any damage done to the shields increases the damage potential of future shots. All these ships lasted about 30 seconds- by the time my vulcans' charge maxed out, the shields were already down on a permanent basis, and then hull drops to zero within another 2-3 seconds.

Then I come across a ship I legit can't deal with: it's running an Ion invader drone! That thing is a menace. Drops right into my weapons bay, cutting the charge rate, then ion bursts. It tears down the door to the next room, but bizarrely changes course and returns to the weapons bay to ion burst it again when the disable drops!

I send my now-unemployed boarding team to kill it, and they do. Ship sends another one, right back to the weapons bay. "Screw this", I say, and I jump away.

I had no trouble with the flagship, literally just activated shields, hacked hacking, cloaked when missiles fired and waited for victory. But this ion intruder ship, man. I bought a reverse ion shield afterward immediately.

I think there's this sense from people that the community thinks vulcans are bad, and it's really not that they're bad. They're just hyper-vulnerable since they're an all-out attack, to the point that you need to have basically every contingency covered to use them. But when online, they're a countdown to enemy ship death.

    • You need 100% evasion via cloak. Missile hit to weapons = start your countdown all over again. That also means level 4 engines and expert pilot/engineer.
    • You need hacking. Strong enemy weapons need to be hacked to buy time on your countdown; enemy hacking needs to be hacked if it targets your weapons so they pick a new target.
    • You need level 3 shields before you even use one vulcan, even early in the game, and level 4 before the end.

This is all setting aside the ludicrous investment in weapon and reactor power required to run even one vulcan, let alone two.

But if you've actually got all that scrap and can do all that, it absolutely trivializes these final fights. Pre-igniter serves to strip ten seconds from said fights, but totally not needed.

I think any run that nets over 2000 scrap is capable of supporting these requirements, if you're able to avoid spending much on fuel, crew, or repairs. Might only be online for the boss though.
