Question about buying weapons or Hacking

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:22 PM PST

I've gotten back into FTL recently in order to get the one achievement I still haven't gotten on Hard, Ancestry (of course). So I've been kinda spamming Rock C, and that's got me wondering a more general question:

For ships with average weapon setups, the sort that isn't completely helpless against two shield bubbles but definitely kinda sucks against it (which seems like most ships), how do you gauge when you should buy a weapon vs something like Hacking in the early to mid game?

Like of course Hacking is extremely powerful and flexible, but when I have something like 3 drone parts, I'm not too keen on getting it if there's, say, a BL2 I can also purchase. But usually the decision is trickier, like getting Hacking at the end of Sector 2 vs getting a...Chain Laser, with its long initial charge time. Or an HL1, which hits with a nice thump but is not ideal at ensuring I can break through shield layers. What's the cut-off line for you guys?

And when it comes to buying weapons in general, when do you guys throw in the towel and buy a more mediocre weapon? On Hard, I'm inclined to prioritize anything that shoots two lasers if I'm approaching the end of Sector 2, but I'm more reluctant to go with, say, a single ion weapon. With Rock C in particular, I usually ignore beams (except maybe Halberd), because of the lack of synergy with the Crystal Heavy. Similar thought process when I'm looking for a possible third weapon in Sector 4/5 as enemies start having three shields, though usually I have Hacking by then and it's more survivable.
