Faster Than Light | My year-old FTL run

Faster Than Light | My year-old FTL run

    My year-old FTL run

A little over a year ago I was doing a non-AE Hard winstreak attempt, flying all the A-types in unlock order. I had successfully gotten to number 7 on the list, the dreaded Rock A. I went for a teleporter early on, but poor play resulted in losing all of my original rock crew in Sector 3. I went on, an Engi at the helm of a Rock cruiser, buying a couple Mantis to replace my boarders (or maybe I found one and bought the other, I don't remember all the details. I also had a Zoltan in engines). But things were looking bad...

Now, I'm someone who likes to talk a big game about not rage-quitting FTL. I can't count the number of runs I've managed to pull from the slavering maw of seemingly-certain defeat, nor quantify the amount of pure fun I've had just doing my best to survive on ultimately doomed runs.

But after my first attempts at winstreaking (a successful C-type streak, followed by the 6 A-types before the Rock cruiser), I was feeling invested in success, in results over process. This was early on during quarantine, my general anxiety was through the roof, and goddammit how was I supposed to salvage this run after fucking it up so badly? (Sometimes when I'm stressed, an ostensibly fun activity like playing a game becomes the focus of the feelings I'm trying to escape, as if I could make things right in the world if I could just succeed in this stupid thing arghhrgrhrhh)

Anyway, I took a breath and did the mature thing instead of rage-quitting: I didn't play video games for about 14 months! Occasionally I got the urge to play FTL again, but I remembered that albatross, the doomed Rock A run, and suppressed it. If the stupid game wasn't gonna let me win then I wasn't playing.

Until today. I've been in a better headspace lately, so I decided I wanted to play, and just try my best. I could relax with a nice Crystal B run once my ship was atomized or my crew eviscerated (we were in Sector 4 Mantis Homeworlds).

Except somehow, I pulled it off! My two Mantis achieved crew kills with the Rock A's Artemis missile as support, the ship got down to 7 hull, I transitioned it to a gunship, bought Cloaking, accepted a bribe of a Hull Repair drone, bought a Hull Smasher II and a BLII, filled out the crew with a couple humans and another Engi, completed the Engi Homeworlds quest... and beat back Giant Alien Spiders twice.

Zero damage flagship for phases 1 & 2. Weapons were the Hull Smasher II, BLII, and Halberd, with a Combat I & DDI drones (Combat switched out for a Beam I in phase 3).

Wish me luck: win or lose, I'm flying Stealth A next. And good luck to all of you. It's good to be back
