[CE] Pretty Sure this is my best win I've ever had

Pulled this off today. Without much thought I can confidently say this is the best win I have ever had, standard or CE.

Stealth-Cruiser Type-B run is hurting my soul (does the game know....?)

What is your favorite species in FTL?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:52 PM PST

I know, a good balance of each one's strengths and weakness are essential to building a good crew, but I'm talking about character design and the "coolness" factor here...

But also usefulness. Ranking top down, for me:

Zoltan, Engi, Rockmen, Mantis, Crystal, Slug, Human.

Challenge ruleset: Pseudo 2 player ftl with Captain and XO ("Star Trek/Captain Sonar Mode")

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:04 AM PST

TL;DR: One player streams FTL on discord and executes orders he is given, the other watches the stream and issues the orders over voice chat. Streamer cannot execute commands unless given explicit orders. No pausing or hotkeys. Chaos ensues.

My friends and I have been trying this a bit, it's a fun and very alternate game mode that is quite difficult and ftl feel fresh again. Plus, it makes you feel like Captain Picard.

    The setup:

Player 1 streams the game on discord to player 2. No setup is required to stream on discord, you just select 'go live' with ftl open and the stream starts. No one can see it except people in your discord server.

    • Player 1 is the Executive Officer (XO). He may not pause the game. He may not use his keyboard either (To prevent accidental cheating, I suggest unplugging the keyboard entirely). As the XO, he may not do anything in-game unless given explicit orders to do so by the captain.

    • Player 2 is the Captain. He controls the run by issuing verbal commands to the XO over discord.

    • The captain may confer with the XO at any time (typically at stores or when deciding a jump route through a system), but he must issue all orders himself and his decisions are final.

    • For best results, I'd suggest playing on normal or hard.

    • The keyboard may be plugged back in for names, and the captain may rename crew. This can be good for quickly making it clear who he wants moved - "Move John to the medbay!" rather than "Move the human next to the engine room to the medbay"

    • The XO may not offer commentary unprompted - no saying "Teleporter Down Captain!" - unless he's issued an impossible order. For example - ordering a boarding action when the teleporter is broken

This is surprisingly fun for both parties. The Captain has to stay cool under pressure and issue accurate and understandable orders while paying close attention to his own ship and the enemies ship in real time.

The executive officer has to carefully listen to the captain and execute his orders while also asking for clarification when needed ("Move the Engi to weapons" "Which engi sir?" etc). Since the XO is limited to mouse only with no pausing, it's also surprisingly engaging following through with all the orders in real time.

I highly suggest the last rule, as it turns the game a bit adversarial as well. The XO becomes like a vindictive AI, doing exactly what he is ordered to do; nothing more and nothing less. The schadenfreude of seeing someone else's FTL run fall apart is all the sweeter when you can clearly see the impending disaster but the captain is too fixated on something else to issue commands to stop it. Plus, after your ship dies you switch roles!

Out of 3 attempts on normal with new xo/captains every time, our best performance was reaching sector 6 with the Kestral C. As a tip, Boarding is extremely difficult without either hacking or a clone bay, since a bad order or slow XO can easily kill a crew member for good.

Anyone else tried any pseudo co-op like this? If you know anyone who plays FTL (or hell, a total newbie could be the XO for even more entertainment!) I highly suggest giving it a shot.

I don't think this is my original idea but can't remember where I first heard of it from, and have only just started trying it.

Edit: Here are two other rules we've been trying out and are still working on

    • So far the captain has picked the ship, although to make things sporting no one has gone for any of the top tier vessels (Crystal B, Mantis B, Lanius B, etc). It might be fun to have the XO select ship or give him two ship vetos or something - this one isn't a hard rule yet.

    • Optionally, you may have a third player watching the stream and on voice chat as a "second officer" of sorts. Firstly because this mayhem is surprisingly entertaining to watch as a spectator, and optionally because the second officer is allowed to speak directly to the captain without being spoken to, typically to let him know about broken systems or boarding actions he hasn't noticed. We haven't tried this, but it might be interesting to limit this second officer to one sentence per jump or even just a few per sector, so he has to decide when the right time to chime in is.
