Why are “Distress” events so unrewarding?

After losing three crew members to spiders, giant eyes, and the plagued space station, I finally went to the wiki to look through the success results. The uniform trend seems to be that the generic "risk a random crew member's life" answer barely nets you as many resources as an enemy ship capture. What?!...

Rogue-likes inherently favor defensive, methodical playstyles that minimize rng and FTL is no exception. So why is it that choosing the highest-risk event options net you less resources than blue text options that you fulfill mostly by chance? The lowest-risk options ("just have a thing and you pass") consistently offer the highest payouts - from a design perspective, this just seems backwards.

It's like the game wants me to play as non-interactively as possible and that doesn't feel good at all...

Sometimes the game just says "no".

Figure this: Osprey on normal, starting sector 5. It was a good run so far, got a teleporter and a drone control with defense, found a pike beam and a hull laser. Getting a 3-layer shield was next in line, but hey, what could possibly go wrong? So far I hadn't even needed to repair my hull at a shop, and it was firmly green anyway!

Enters the next protagonist: a drone ship with a hermes, 2-layer shield, a mk2 laser and 2 drones, one attack and one beam. Oh, and meteors.

Here's how everything went horribly wrong.

Act 1) my mk2 misses entirely, its mk2 somehow destroys my drone and starts two fires (because obviously a meteor made sure my shield was off), one in my oxygen room and one in an unoccupied, but close to the weapons, room. "Well shit, that's bad" I say as I send a task force to deal with them.

Act 2) The hermes fires, and of course chooses my shield as its destination. The problem suddenly dawns on me, but of course the beam drone targets my pilot at the very next second, quickly followed by my weapons and beam. I try to react by sending my mantis to the ship (to no avail, the damn thing keeps shooting)

Act 3) I can now only watch as the drones proceed to meticulously rip my ship apart. With 25 hull points I come, and another hermes finishes me off. I proceed to stare at the screen for a few seconds before closing the game, bewildered.

I think I felt what the flagship AI feels when I defeat a whole phase of it without taking a single hit.

How do I deal with mantises

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 02:56 PM PDT

In one of my Kestral Runs I died because of a 5 mantis strong bording party. Any tips on how to deal with them?

Zoltan Shield Bypass: Is it only in Advanced Edition?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 06:31 AM PDT

So I managed to unlock Crystal B, and started a vanilla run with it. Things went swimmingly well with boarding, until I remembered too late that the Flagship's phase 3 has Zoltan Shield?

Or did I recall wrongly? My ship has no weapon at all to hit shields... is my run ruined? All the store shops I've been to (in this vanilla run), I dont see a single Zoltan Shield Bypass for sale. I'm new at this so I get confused between the two modes.

    Dubbing

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 03:11 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I was wondering if it's possible with modding tools to add dubbing. E.g. someone reading mission texts etc.

    Kind regards
